Private Pilot Airplane | Flight 8 - Takeoffs and Landings |
Preflight Discussion
- Lesson objective and completion standards
- Review takeoffs, landings, go-arounds, forward slips as necessary
- How can you determine if you are too high on final? Too low?
- What are the hazards too much speed on final and into the flare?
- How should power be used during landing?
- What is ballooning? How should you correct it?
- What is porpoising? How should you correct it?
- How do you control lateral drift in the flare?
- How do you control longitudinal alignment in the flare?
- How do you correct for crosswind?
- When should you execute a go-around?
- How do you execute a go-around?
- What should you do if you bounce during landing?
- Scenario
- Ask PT to identify hazards and how they would manage risks
- Oral Prep Tasks
- A: When you are endorsed for solo, what type of aircraft can you fly?
- B: Does your airplane have a Minimum Equipment List?
- C: Interpret standard weather briefing
- D: What is the TAS, GS, ETE and fuel requirement for this flight?
- E: What requirements must be met to operate in the Beale TFR? Where did you get this information?
- F: What is the difference between indicated airspeed, calibrated airspeed, true airspeed and groundspeed?
- G: Describe the induction system in your training airplane
- H: Intentionally Blank
Leg 1 - Cameron Park to Lincoln
- Ground Operations
- While taxiing from the ramp, simulate a situation with a fuel truck parked too close to the taxi line. Let student devise corrective action.
- While taxiing from the ramp, simulate a situation with a fuel truck parked too close to the taxi line. Let student devise corrective action.
- Departure
- Normal takeoff. Once airborne, point out a helicopter traveling East-West off the departure end of the runway. (should require climb at Vx, see if student realizes this).
- En route
- Simulate being the passenger and let the PT manage the flight with no guidance
- Arrival at Lincoln
- Conduct standard pattern entry with normal landing to a full stop. Pull into ramp parking to simulate scenario completion.
- Allow student to critique performance – would your passenger be impressed?
- Traffic Patterns
- Practice normal, no-flap, and power off landings.
- Emphasizing stabilized approach and proper decisions regarding go-arounds.
- If other aircraft are in the traffic pattern, simulate that one is a B-737 and ask student to demonstrate proper wake turbulence avoidance procedures.
- Simulate encounter with wind shear on short final
Leg 2 - Lincoln to Cameron Park
- Departure
- Challenge PT to find his/her own way back to your local airport and follow normal traffic pattern entry procedures.
- Challenge PT to find his/her own way back to your local airport and follow normal traffic pattern entry procedures.
- Arrival
- If conditions permit, simulate engine failure upon initial arrival into traffic pattern.
- Encourage PT to simulate appropriate emergency radio calls.
- After landing, have student explain post-landing intentions following the power off landing.
- Conduct pattern work as necessary to increase student skill.
