Flight 4 - Stall Awareness and Recovery


The purpose of this lesson is to raise awareness of how stalls occur and develop the student’s ability recognize and recover from stalls. The student will also practice maneuvers listed as review.


Pancake Breakfast Fly-in at Auburn

There is an EAA pancake breakfast/fly-in at the Auburn Airport today. You and your non-pilot friend decide to attend. Expect a lot of aircraft to be in the vicinity of this airport during the event. Just prior to the flight, your buddy, who is a big sailboat fan, asks you if it would be possible to over-fly the boat race that is taking place on a Folsom Lake today. You don’t see any problem accommodating his request.

  • Prepare for flight to the Auburn Airport
    • Use your plotter to determine the true course and distance in nautical miles from Cameron Park airport to Auburn Airport. Convert the true course to a magnetic course by applying the magnetic deviation depicted on the sectional chart for this area.
    • On the notepad that you take with you into the airplane, write down these details regarding the Auburn airport:
      • Airport Name and Identifier
      • Airport Elevation
      • Traffic Pattern Altitude
      • CTAF Frequency
      • AWOS Frequency
      • Runway identifiers, width, length and type of visual glide slope indicator, and traffic pattern direction
  • Obtain a weather briefing and be prepared to present it during the Preflight Discussion

  • meet the desired outcomes listed in the learning objectives table.
  • conduct normal checklist procedures without input from the instructor.
  • recognize when a stall is occurring and promptly conduct the proper recovery procedure.
  • maintain altitude ±250 feet, airspeed within ±20 knots, heading within ±30 degrees, and roll out on desired headings within ±30 degrees while reviewing maneuvers.
