Flight 14 - Performance Takeoffs and Landings

Objective

The purpose of this lesson is to introduce the elements associated with short field and soft-field takeoffs and landings and tower-controlled airport procedures.

Scenario

Take me out to the ball game.

You and your friend (use instructor’s weight for preflight planning) are going over to a neighboring town for a company soft ball game. However, when you obtain your weather briefing for the day’s flight the briefer informs you of the following NOTAM’s:

Preparation
  • Study these Jeppesen Private Pilot Maneuvers
    • Chapter 7 - Performance Takeoffs and Landings
      • Maneuver 28 - Short-Field Takeoff and Climb
      • Maneuver 29 - Short-Field Approach and Landing
      • Maneuver 30 - Soft-Field Takeoff and Climb
      • Maneuver 31 - Soft-Field Approach and Landing
  • Study your training airplane’s POH Chapter 4 for specific guidance related to performing short field approach and landing.
  • Study your training airplane’s maneuver guide for Short-Field and Soft-Field takeoff and landing techniques.
  • Calculate short-field takeoff and landing distance for your training airplane using the performance charts in Chapter 5 of the POH.
  • Prepare for flight to the Mather Airport
  • Obtain a weather briefing and be prepared to present it during the Preflight Discussion
  • Calculate weight and balance and takeoff and landing performance
  • Review aircraft maintenance records to determine compliance with inspection requirements.
